Digital mapping is a powerful tool for visualizing and analyzing environment and development conditions within countries or regions. But for many parts of the developing world, the basic information needed to create digital maps at a useful scale is not available. This remarkable CD-ROM contains a unique set of internationally comparable digital maps at a scale of 1:1 million for every country in Africa. Based on the Digital Chart of the World, the Africa Data Sampler includes data on protected areas, forests, mangroves, and wetlands, as well as drainage, topography, infrastructure, and sub-national administrative boundaries with corresponding population estimates for the entire continent. The digital format allows users with the appropriate software (ArcView 1 for Windows) to view, query, print, and distribute maps.
Technical description and requirements: This CD-ROM contains digital data sets in PC ARC/INFO format for 53 countries in Robinson Projection; five sample views in ArcView 1 for each country; ARC/INFO Export files for all countries in geographic format; and a data set of political and ocean boundaries for the African continent. The CD-ROM requires a CD-ROM drive, ArcView 1 for Windows, an IBM or compatible PC with an 80486 or higher processor, and a minimum of 8 megabytes of RAM.
