The first edition of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative comprises of greenhouse gas accounting and reporting standards, and practical guidance for business and other types of organizations. It addresses the six greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol. The standards and guidance will help companies and others develop a credible greenhouse gas inventory underpinned by accounting and reporting principles based on established financial accounting practices, serve as an internal management tool, and provide information that complements other local and global climate initiatives and schemes. The protocol was developed by a unique multi-stakeholder partnership of over 350 businesses, NGOs, and governments led by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development
