padThe Last Frontier Forests
Ecosystems and Economies on the Edge

Dirk Bryant

This report provides the first description of the location and status of the world's frontier forests - the large, ecologically intact, and relatively undisturbed natural forest that still remain. The Last Frontier Forests first describes the importance of frontier forests, where and why they have been cleared, and the current threats they face. A forest frontier index ranks countries according to the frontier forest lost and the proportion of remaining frontier that is moderately or highly threatened. The remainder of the report contains a set of colorful, regional maps depicting the world's frontier forests, complemented by a fold-out map inside the front cover that shows where the frontier forests existed 8,000 years ago and where they are found today.
