Monitoring for Impact
Lessons on Natural Resources Monitoring from 13 NGOs
Volume 1

Christian Ottke , Peter Kristensen, David Maddox and Eric Rodenburg

Monitoring for Impact is a product of the combined efforts of the World Resources Institute's (WRI) Global Forest Watch (GFW) program and Conservation International's (CI) Monitoring and Evaluation Program. GFW was launched in 1997 by WRI with non-governemtal organizations (NGOs) and local leaders from nations with significant forest resources. GFW links satellite imagery with on-the-ground investigation by local groups to assemble information about risks to the world's great forests. It uses the Internet to make the information widely available.
Creating monitoring programs may seem easy, but actually isn't. There are three primary impediments: money, credible data, and communication skills. We emphasize communications skills because the best data in the world is useless if it lies fallow. But credible data is also critical to convice skeptics and engender trust. Without the three ingredients, a monitoring organization's efforts are wasted and the opportunity to affect policies and events is squandered.

NGOs play a vital role in society. They provide important information to governments in development of their natural resources management plans. Good, independent information provided by NGOs on the status of natural resources and governments and private industry activities - that is, monitoring data - helps societies improve their natural resources management.

This volume is a hands-on handbook on organizing and implementing a natural resources monitoring programs.

Volume 2 contains the stories of 13 NGO's monitoring programs. The full text is available at http://www.globalforestwatch.org
