World Resources Institute
Hosted by Jessica Tuchman Mathews and David Gergen
Recommended for college students, this hour-long program focuses on three urgent global environmental issues, how they interrelate, and what kind of actions are necessary for global environmental protection. Viewers will see the problems of population growth, biodiversity loss, and global warming documented in real-life examples: a village-based family-planning program in Zimbabwe, Africa; a rainforest conservation project managed by Kuna Indians in Panama; and an energy conservation project in Massachusetts. Noted hosts Jessica Tuchman Mathews, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and David Gergen, former editor-at-large, U.S. News and World Report, provide substantial commentary and analysis. The outgrowth of a conference of the American Assembly convened on the 20th anniversary of Earth Day, this video also features actual footage from the conference in which international experts and policymakers debate and discuss these pressing problems. A 12-page instructor guide provides background information, study questions, and references. (May also be suitable for advanced senior high students.)
